Pintor Señor Esquina
Welcome to Pintor Señor Esquina's "About Us" page. Learn more about my passion, inspiration and unique approach to art. I am dedicated to creating paintings that capture the light of life and reflect the soul.

My Story
I often sit hunched over, completely immersed in my element. My hands carry the paint, the brushes dance across the canvas. I live for creation and each painting is a child of my soul. From life and nature a draw my inspiration. All my artworks carry Spanish names, in order to show my love for Spain.
My artistic name, Pintor Señor Esquina, is inspired by my Dutch surname, Hoekstra. The word hoek means "corner" or "angle," and Esquina is its Spanish counterpart. More than a translation, it reflects the way I see the world: from different perspectives, where stories, emotions, and experiences intersect.
Born in 1970 in the Netherlands and based in Sitges, Spain, I am a contemporary artist, author, and founder of Pintor Señor Esquina, Señor Esquina Publishing, and Galeria Esquina. The Mediterranean light, vibrant culture, and unique atmosphere of the region continue to inspire my work and artistic vision.
I live in and work/ distribution is in Almere, the Netherlands an Sitges, Catalonia.

Inspiration & Influences
My work is rooted in Contemporary Neo-Cubism, Figurative Expressionism, symbolism, and visual storytelling. Over the years, I have developed my own artistic philosophy, ES · KIE · NA · TIS · ME a visual language that explores perspective, identity, emotion, and human connection. Inspired by the concept of esquina, the meeting point of different viewpoints, it reflects my belief that every story can be seen from more than one angle.
Central to this philosophy is the idea of Entre Líneas, between the lines. I am fascinated by what lies beyond the visible: the emotions, memories, and narratives that shape our experiences. Through fragmented forms, bold colours, and layered compositions, I seek to reveal not only what we see, but also what we feel.
My influences are broad and diverse: Bauhaus, Joaquín Sorolla’s mastery of sunlight and water, Monet, Van Gogh, Miró, Kandinsky, Picasso and Hokusai. Yet my work remains unique, characterized by directness, clarity, and warmth.

My Process
Working primarily with acrylics, I embrace both structure and spontaneity. My process is methodical in composition yet intuitive in execution, allowing colour, light, and atmosphere to guide each piece toward its final form. Rather than offering definitive answers, my paintings invite viewers to pause, reflect, and discover their own stories within the work.
As both painter and author, I see art as a form of storytelling. Every painting is a visual narrative an open dialogue between artist and viewer, where meaning is personal and constantly evolving.
My work is held in private collections internationally and has been presented through selected exhibitions and public art initiatives. Whether exhibited in galleries, public spaces, or private collections, my goal remains the same: to create meaningful connections through art and to offer a different perspective from which to view the world.
Besides my paintings, I write, mainly in Dutch, stories and love to take still-life photographs. And I design showcases for websites. I also worked for many years in the Dutch Museum Industry and as a visual merchandiser.
My collaboration with Sitges Artists is a special way for me to share my work alongside a group of talented local Sitges Artists.
Through this creative community, you can discover not only my own artworks, but also the unique styles, ideas and expressions of other artists from Sitges.
